SUMMARY:Rangoli Workshop with Vijaya Mohan
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \nEven before the first rays of the sun are visible on the horizon\, at least 10 million Indian households sweep and clean their door entrances and draw picturesque and colourful designs called rangoli or kolam outside their houses. The word rangoli is derived from rangavalli – (rang meaning colours and valli meaning creepers) so Rangavalli means a row of colourful creepers. It is generally believed that rangoli/kolam are drawn to welcome Lakshmi the Goddess of Wealth into the house and also to ward off evil spirits. \n  \nThese designs evoke a sense of geometry\, creativity\, sensitivity and beauty and is considered as an important form of artistic expression. As an art form\, rangoli/kolam teaches one patience\, endurance and determination. It also enhances creativity\, concentration and confidence. \n  \nMs Vijaya Mohan will be conducting hands-on rangoli-making workshop as well as a share its history and significance from its origins to the practices here in Singapore.

SUMMARY:Singapore Malayalees: Cultural Insights
DESCRIPTION: \n\nDear Friends: \n  \nWe are pleased to share that CSTC and NLB will be bringing you a special introduction to the Singapore Malayalee community – a rich and diverse sub-ethnic group among Singapore Indians. You’ll get a glimpse of their cultural practices\, artifacts\, dance\, music and\, of course\, a taste of their unique cuisine! \n  \nThe Singapore Malayalees are the second biggest community among Indians in Singapore. They have been here since the early days of Singapore as a British colony. Did you know that a Malayalee Muslim cemetery was here in Singapore before Raffles arrive in 1819? The Malayalees have served Singapore well and distinguished themselves as\, among other things\, trade unionists\, journalists\, lawyers and doctors\, and artists. One of their community became President of Singapore – Mr C V Devan Nair! \n  \nWe hope you will come\, see and enjoy the presentation! \n  \nLooking forward to seeing on Saturday\, 18 March at NLB!
