Flowers are a necessity in many Hindu rituals: as part of traditional clothing\, tributes to gods\, festive decorations\, and even medicine. For instance\, during weddings\, the bride makes her entrance beneath a flower canopy called the phoolon ki chaadar. It is typically decorated with bright red flowers to symbolise purity\, protection\, and bravery. \n  \nAnushia Flower Shop is also a pioneer in its field where they are the first garland maker in Singapore to digitalise their business. Their website was launched in 2019 with the help of Mr Selvam’s son and the move has greatly improved their business.

In total\, the academy teaches 3 types of dance\, 1 style of theatre and 7 musical instruments (including voice!). \n  \nBeyond teaching\, the academy is actively involved in bringing the arts to the community. During the 1960s\, Mrs Bhaskar (current artistic director) led the troupe in Aneka Ragam Rakyat\, a multi-cultural performance bringing arts to the remote villages in Singapore. Today\, the academy works with partners such as the National Institute of Education and National Library Board to bring Indian arts to a greater audience. The dancers and directors are also constantly pushing themselves to greater artistic heights by conceptualize new and exciting repertoires.

Facilitators will brief participants before the start of the programme.\nPlease arrive 20 minutes before our scheduled meeting time for registration and temperature taking.\nPlease do not attend the event if you are feeling unwell.\nLook out for our facilitators who will be wearing yellow or blue festival t-shirts.\n\n  \nAbout the tour conductor:  \nWhen P S Somesekharan (Mr Soma) first arrived in Singapore from Chennai in 1981\, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple was the first temple he visited. It was a place for refuge and comfort to him\, and he eventually became the temple committee member in 1989 and currently manages the temple’s finance and community cultural programmes\, such as being a part of My Community Festival 2021. \n  \nHis vision for the temple is to emulate the rituals and practices of Tirumala Temple in Andhra Pradesh\, India\, so that devotees in Singapore do not have to travel all the way there for religious needs. \n  \nAbout Sri Srinivas Perumal Temple \nLocated on Serangoon Road\, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is a National Monument with a history dating back to the 1850s. It was a place for refuge and comfort to him\, and he eventually became the temple committee member in 1989 and currently manages the temple’s finance and community cultural programmes\, such as being a part of My Community Festival 2021. \n  \nHis vision for the temple is to emulate the rituals and practices of Tirumala Temple in Andhra Pradesh\, India\, so that devotees in Singapore do not have to travel all the way there for religious needs. \n  \nAbout Sri Srinivas Perumal Temple \nLocated on Serangoon Road\, the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple is a National Monument with a history dating back to the 1850s. In total\, the academy teaches 3 types of dance\, 1 style of theatre and 7 musical instruments (including voice!). \n  \nBeyond teaching\, the academy is actively involved in bringing the arts to the community. During the 1960s\, Mrs Bhaskar (current artistic director) led the troupe in Aneka Ragam Rakyat\, a multi-cultural performance bringing arts to the remote villages in Singapore. Today\, the academy works with partners such as the National Institute of Education and National Library Board to bring Indian arts to a greater audience. The dancers and directors are also constantly pushing themselves to greater artistic heights by conceptualize new and exciting repertoires.

SUMMARY:Intercultural Seminar Series | Shaping Cultures and Minds in Early Singapore: Tamil Muslims and Malay Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that some of the earliest Tamil books and newspapers in Singapore were published by the Tamil Muslim community here? What’s more fascinating is that the same community was instrumental in early Malay publishing in Singapore! Interested to know more about how the Tamil Muslim publishers and the Malay literati interacted and worked together? \n  \nCome join us in a specially curated seminar which will delve deep into this little-known subject.  \n  \nSynopsis: \nEarly Singapore was marked by rapid economic enterprises by different communities that contributed to the multicultural life. Despite the enclaves of ethnic settlements under the Raffles Town Plan of 1828\, there were a lot more intercultural engagements among communities along the Singapore River to Telok Ayer and stretching to the Kallang River. The Kampong Glam area was particularly interesting. Besides being an economic node in early Singapore\, it was also the intellectual hub of the Malays. Publishing houses played a significant role in the transmission of ideas and knowledge for the region. What is less known is the contributions of Tamil Muslims in the literary translation and publishing scene. This seminar will discuss the interactions between Tamil Muslim literati and Malay publishing houses in the Kampong Glam area. \n  \nPresenters \n  \nDr Torsten Tschacher \nDr. Torsten Tschacher has long been involved in researching Tamil Muslims in Singapore. He is currently associated with the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies. His research focuses on the history and textual traditions of Tamil-speaking Muslim societies in South India\, Sri Lanka\, Singapore\, and Malaysia. His is the author of the book Race\, Religion\, and the ‘Indian Muslim’ Predicament in Singapore. He co-edited a collection entitled Non-Shia Practices of Muḥarram in South Asia and the Diaspora: Beyond Mourning. He has also published an essay on Singapore Tamil Muslims in the book Sojourners to Settlers: Tamils in Singapore.  \n  \nDr Azhar Ibrahim \nDr Azhar Ibrahim is a Lecturer at the Department of Malay Studies\, National University of Singapore. He teaches Malay-Indonesian literature and ideologies of development at the Department. In addition to his academic work\, he is also Chairman of the Literary Committee\, Malay Language Council; and Chairman\, Advisory Panel\, Malay Language Service\, National Library Board. His research interest includes sociology of literature\, social theology\, Islamic thought\, critical literacy\, and the Malay-Indonesian intellectual development. Amongst his published works are: Historical Imagination and Cultural Responses to Colonialism and Nationalism: A Critical Malaysian Perspective (2017)\, Contemporary Islamic Discourse in the Malay-Indonesia World (2014) and Narrating Presence: Awakening from Cultural Amnesia (2014). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

Flowers are a necessity in many Hindu rituals: as part of traditional clothing\, tributes to gods\, festive decorations\, and even medicine. For instance\, during weddings\, the bride makes her entrance beneath a flower canopy called the phoolon ki chaadar. It is typically decorated with bright red flowers to symbolise purity\, protection\, and bravery. \n  \nAnushia Flower Shop is also a pioneer in its field where they are the first garland maker in Singapore to digitalise their business. Their website was launched in 2019 with the help of Mr Selvam’s son and the move has greatly improved their business.

Different proportions of jaggery (raw sugar)\, ghee and milk result in different textures and flavours so making them at home allows her to tailor the sweets to her loved ones’ preferences! When she puts in all this love and care into her sweets and see the smiles on the faces of friends and family\, that sense of satisfaction is the sweetest thing to her.
