After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Singapore Indian Education Trust (SIET) Charity Golf returns this year. The event which raises funds for SIET, will be held on 26 August 2022 at Orchid Country Club.

Formed in 1967 by then trade unionist G Kandasamy, SIET raises funds to support needy and deserving Singaporean Indian students’ educational aspirations. Every year, SIET awards bursaries to more than 200 students from ITE to tertiary levels.

The SIET Charity Golf was started in 2007 by a group of golfing friends who wanted to contribute to SIET.  More than 100 players participate in the event every year, which is followed by an evening dinner, lucky draw, and tournament prizes.

To date, the event has raised close to S$1,000,000.

Gopal Varutharaju, Chairman of SIET, said: “After two years, many golfers are looking forward to playing again. We are especially keen to restart our fundraising efforts as the funds are drying up. One encouraging trend is that Singapore Indian students nowadays are more open to seeking financial assistance, unlike older generations who were shy to approach for help.”

The SIET also helps needy students pursue their tertiary education through interest free loans.

Singapore Indian students nowadays are more open to seeking financial assistance, unlike older generations who were too shy to approach for help.”
