Nestled along the vibrant Race Course Road in Singapore, Gayatri Restaurant has long been my go-to destination for authentic local Indian cuisine, especially when I want to impress my foreign guests. While many might associate Indian food with naan and butter chicken, I relish the opportunity to showcase the rich tapestry of Singaporean South Indian flavours that Gayatri so expertly presents.
Recently, I had the pleasure of dining there with three of my friends, and we were eager to explore some of the new additions to their menu. As we settled into the warm, inviting ambience of Gayatri, the excitement was palpable. The restaurant has a knack for making you feel at home, with its friendly staff and the tantalising aroma of spices wafting through the air. We couldn’t wait to dive into the culinary delights that awaited us.

To kick off our feast, we ordered the Appam Jala and Mutton Mysore. The Appam Jala, with its delicate lace-like structure, was light and airy, making it the perfect companion for the robust flavours of the Mutton Mysore. This dish has always been a personal favourite of mine at Gayatri. The mutton, tender and boneless, was infused with a spicy, peppery kick that melted in my mouth. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavour, perfectly complemented by the accompanying chicken gravy, which we eagerly dunked our appams into.

Next on our culinary adventure was the Fish Head Curry, served with a generous portion of white rice. The freshness of the red snapper fish head was remarkable; I could taste the sweetness of the fish in every bite. The tangy, spicy gravy was a revelation, and I found myself wishing for a piece of prata to soak up every last drop. The dish was beautifully adorned with tomatoes, brinjal, and ladies’ fingers, ensuring we got our greens while indulging in this rich, flavorful experience. If you find yourself at Gayatri, do not leave without trying the fish head curry and rice set—it is simply divine. |

Of course, we couldn’t resist ordering the Crispy Fish Cutlets. These generously sized cutlets are a must-try, and I recommend sharing them unless you have a hearty appetite, in which case, you might just want one all to yourself. The crispy exterior gives way to a flavourful filling of spiced potatoes and fish. Gayathri served the cutlets with 2 dipping sauces – sweet dark soya sauce (kichap manis) with sliced chilli padi and a chilli sambal. It was a great addition, the sweet and spicy kichap manis was my favourite and really brought the dish together. In fact, in many Singapore Tamil homes, meals tend to be a mix of different styles- an Indian curry, with stir-fried vegetables and condiments like sambals to give that extra kick. |

Our exploration continued with the Kari Mutton Dosai, a delightful twist on the traditional dosai. Instead of the usual potato stuffing, this dosai was filled with mutton masala, and it was nothing short of spectacular. If you’re looking for something lighter yet satisfying, this dish is an excellent choice. The dosai paired beautifully with the coconut and mint chutney, adding a refreshing contrast to the rich flavours of the mutton. |
As we neared the end of our meal, we couldn’t resist indulging in dessert. We opted for the Mango and Pistachio Kulfi, a perfect way to round off our spicy feast. The pistachio kulfi, in particular, was a standout—creamy and nutty, it provided a delightful contrast to the bold flavours we had just experienced. Each spoonful was a sweet reminder of the culinary journey we had embarked upon that evening.
Gayatri Restaurant continues to impress with its authentic South Indian offerings and warm hospitality. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Singapore, this gem on Race Course Road is a must-visit for anyone craving genuine Singapore Indian cuisine. From the flavourful Mutton Mysore to the unforgettable fish head curry, every dish tells a story of tradition and passion. So, gather your friends, bring your appetite, and prepare for a delightful dining experience that will leave you coming back for more.
