We are pleased to share that CSTC and NLB will be bringing you a special introduction to the Singapore Malayalee community – a rich and diverse sub-ethnic group among Singapore Indians. You’ll get a glimpse of their cultural practices, artifacts, dance, music and, of course, a taste of their unique cuisine!

The Singapore Malayalees are the second biggest community among Indians in Singapore. They have been here since the early days of Singapore as a British colony. Did you know that a Malayalee Muslim cemetery was here in Singapore before Raffles arrive in 1819? The Malayalees have served Singapore well and distinguished themselves as, among other things, trade unionists, journalists, lawyers and doctors, and artists. One of their community became President of Singapore – Mr C V Devan Nair!

சிங்கப்பூர் இந்தியரிடையே, தமிழர்களுக்கு அடுத்து ஆகப் பெரிய சமூகமாக உள்ள சிங்கப்பூர் மலையாளி சமூகத்தைப் பற்றிய ஓர் அறிமுகத்தை முன்வைப்பதில், தேசிய நூலக வாரியமும் சிங்கப்பூர்த் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டு மையமும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகின்றன. மொழியாலும் பண்பாட்டாலும் நம்மோடு மிக அணுக்கமாக இருக்கும் இந்தச் சமூகத்தைப் பற்றிச் சற்று ஆழமாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ளவே இந்த முயற்சி. அவர்தம் கலைப்பொருட்கள், நடனம், இசை, உணவு உள்ளிட்ட பல பண்பாட்டுக் கூறுகளை நாம் ருசி பார்க்கப் போகிறோம்!

ஆங்கிலேயர்களின் காலனியாகச் சிங்கப்பூர் நிறுவப்பட்ட காலத்திலிருந்தே அவர்கள் இங்கு இருக்கிறார்கள். 1819 இல் ராஃபிள்ஸ் வருவதற்குமுன், சிங்கப்பூரில் ஒரு மலையாளி முஸ்லிம் கல்லறை இருந்தது உங்களுக்குத் தெரியுமா?

மலையாளிகள் சிங்கப்பூருக்குச் செய்திருக்கும் பங்களிப்புகள் மிகச் சிறப்பானவை. தொழிற்சங்கவாதிகள், ஊடகவியலாளர்கள், வழக்கறிஞர்கள், மருத்துவர்கள், கலைஞர்கள் எனப் பல்வேறு துறைகளில் அவர்கள் கொடிகட்டிப் பறந்திருக்கின்றனர். நம் பெருமதிப்பிற்குரிய சிங்கப்பூர் அதிபர் திரு சி.வி. தேவன் நாயர் அச்சமூகத்தின் தலைசிறந்த பேராளராக விளங்கினார்!
